How To Recover When You Break A Good Habit

These are mental tactics to use when you have broken a good habit. How do you get back to a state where you are once more focused? See below.

Tactics

Feel

Emotions power everything, including habits. Therefore, you must go back to WHY you wanted this dream in the first place. Look at any actual images or other reminders that show the positive outcome of sticking to your habit. Use these images to remind yourself what winning looks like.

Plan

Rather than dwelling in guilt or feeling sorry for past mistakes, focus on understanding why you broke your habit in the first place. Notice any patterns in your behaviour or triggers in your environment that encourage you to lose focus. Plan in advance to prevent these triggers from derailing you once more in the future.

Records

Aim for a longer period of consistency. Rather than try to be perfect, simply aim to break your prior record. If you lasted X days before, then try to stick to your good habit for longer than X days this time. Your aim is simply to improve and build your discipline over time.

Try forever

Don’t give up. It doesn’t matter how many times you try again as long as you get there in the end. Don’t feel any shame as long as you try. Persist.
